Forget Something? Substitutes for Beauty Essentials.

Forget Something? Subsitutes for Beauty Essentials.

Imagine this scenario. You’re on a week-long vacation in Hawaii and you just got to your resort. You pull everything out of your bag and begin to put toiletries in the bathroom and clothes in the bureau. As you begin to arrange your toiletries on the counter, *gasp!* You realize you forgot something. What’s your plan of action? Before you rush to the nearest, likely overpriced, drug store or gift shop, here are some tried-and-true substitutes for a few of your beauty essentials.

1. Conditioner as shaving cream
Yikes! If you forgot your shaving cream, this is serious cause for panic, especially if you’re vacationing in a hot, tropical destination. Hair conditioner works just as well as shaving cream, because of their similar properties. Both are moisturizing and will allow your razor to glide gently across your legs, minimizing chances of razor burn. In a pinch, body wash works too.

2. Toothpaste as acne medication
It’s easy to pass over your acne medication when packing your face regimen because the tube or pot is usually pretty small. If this happens to you, use your toothpaste. It sounds weird, to put toothpaste on your face (if it were meant for your face, it would be called facepaste, right?), but believe me, it works. After washing your face, dab a small amount of toothpaste on your zit and it will shrink overnight. Yes, really! Be careful what kind of toothpaste you use though. Whitening toothpastes or ones high in fluoride will irritate your skin and dry you out too much. Stick to plain gel paste and ones low in fluoride.

3. Lotion as anti-frizz hair cream
The humid, tropical climate of your vacation spot and your hair type do not mix. The not-so-secret truth is that you will lose this battle every time. What do you do if you forgot your savior – your anti-frizz cream? Squeeze a small amount of lotion into your hands and apply to your hair as if it was your hair cream. It should work just as well as your regular product, and keep your hair under control (at least for an hour or two!).

4. Toilet seat covers as oil absorbing sheets
For those with naturally oily skin, forgetting your blotting sheets is definitely not ideal. What on earth can you use in it’s place? Go to your resort’s public restroom and grab one of their paper toilet seat covers. I would suggest tearing it into little squares so that you can tuck them easily into your beach bag or evening clutch. It’s much classier than pulling out a whole toilet seat cover while tanning at the pool and will really work to absorb excess oil.

5. Hand sanitizer as deodorant
Did you forget your deodorant but packed hand sanitizer in your carry-on bag? Use it instead. Put a dollop in your hands and rub under your armpits. Wait a few minutes for it to dry and you will be good to go! Don’t worry, you won’t be walking around smelling like a bottle of rubbing alcohol, which is just as unattractive as smelling badly!

If you happen to forget any of these beauty essentials the next time you go on a trip, don’t panic. More likely than not, you have a great substitute that you DID remember to pack! Happy traveling!
