What Does Your Tie Say About You?

What Does Your Tie Say About You?

By Jeremy T Brown

A tie knot can say a lot about a man. Men don't often get the chance to accessorize, but when they do they take full advantage of it. This is where the necktie comes in; it's become a way for men to express their personal style. Of course keeping your tie in top shape is always important but did you know that the size, pattern and color can help exude your personality?

Windsor neckties come in three sizes. There is the normal width, which is the most popularly worn tie and is seen as responsible and professional. Fat ties are often perceived as overly-confident and showy, while skinny ties can be found on a trendier demographic.

Patterns greatly impact the look of your tie. The classic stripes, which were originally used in Britain to show which school you attended, are conservative and safe. Paisley, which came about in the 60s and remains in style, is often associated with a freethinker. Graphic ties are a much more obvious way to show your personality and they range from holiday prints to everyday comedy to favorite sports teams. Solid pattern ties can also say something about your personality; they are considered to be bold and decided and each color can say enough on its own.

Red is a power color, a color of passion and strength. A red tie would be the perfect choice for an important meeting or presentation. Black tie knots are usually reserved for more formal events and tend to make a statement. While most men save black ties for special occasions, they are often worn by men in a more serious line of work.

Navy blue and brown ties, while they may be boring, can show that you are practical and reliable. These standard and subdued colors show you can remain professional while putting less of an emphasis on your wardrobe. A blue tie knot shows tranquility and a sense of calm, which can be very helpful to wear to a stressful meeting or on a busy workday. This color helps you seem cool and collected, which in turn may help you feel calm as well.

Yellow and gold, although similar in hue, have a very different visual impact. Yellows are vibrant, colorful and show an outgoing personality. Gold is often associated with wealth and helps you look polished and well manicured. With so many options, a tie can help you pinpoint your sense of style and turn your personality into a personal image.
