Gorgeous Hairstyles for Women Over 40

It is only when women reach their much dreaded 40th birthday do they realise it's not a bad age to be! In fact you could say it is the best period in a woman's life. You don't jump into anything blindly but at the same time, you don't spend inordinate amounts of time weighing pros and cons. You are definitely more self-assured and you tend to take decisions in a much faster and mature way.

The forties is when women tend to cut their hair really short as they feel they can't quite carry off Rapunzelean tresses without raising a few eyebrows. But this need not be the case; there are several celebrities who have maintained their long locks well into their fifties and manage to look absolutely gorgeous.

There is a perceptible sense of urgency that assails 40+ women that they have very little time left on their hands and they want to cram in as much as they can in each day. One thing which they are more likely to do is experiment with their hair. Those with short hair try growing out their hair, and those with lovely long hair, cut it really short.

Something else that entices these mature women is to change the colour of their hair and use rich highlights. It is like they have finally realised that it is just hair and if it doesn't suit them they can always change the style or colour, which doesn't come easily to younger women.

The most popular hairstyles involve short hair like cutting it so short that it barely grazes the shoulders and layering it in such a way that a few strands frame the face, or cutting a long fringe that rests just above or even over the eyebrows while the rest of the hair is cut short with thick wavy curls. There is also the really short boyish haircut with more hair on top and the rest almost like a buzz cut. This pixie look can shave off a few years for some women and give them a mischievous air.

The style that most women opt for is the straight no-nonsense cut just above the neck, with the ends turned inwards or outwards and a straight or sideward fringe. This is practically a zero maintenance style that will need just a bit of blow drying to keep those recalcitrant strands in place throughout the day.

If you still have healthy, long hair there is no reason why you should cut your hair. You can either straighten it out or have it cut in layers, or style it in straight waves up to chin length and then let it settle into long and fairly big spirals. This is a very elegant style that will look perfect both in the boardroom as well as at a cocktail party.

So if you are hitting 40 any time soon, or if you entered the charmed circle several years ago, you can be sure that your hair can continue to be your crowning glory in any style or colour you want. You just need a little imagination, a dab of creativity, and of course a sense of adventure to come up with a gorgeous hairstyle that will make heads turn.
